History

Mrah Salameh restaurant lies in a neighborhood in the west side of Madaba where natural caves have evolved over the past decades. Such caves have witnessed several civilizations (i.e. Moabite, Nabatean, Ghassanids, Omayyad, and the Abbasid).
Going back through time, inhabitants started settling in the caves of Madaba as early as 500,000 – 10,000 B.C.; also known as the Stone Age.
After the discovery of copper ore deposits in Wadi Araba during the Bronze Stone Age (4000 – 3150 BC), and by using fire, man was able to smelt and manufacture tools that are more convenient and easily controlled than the previously used stone tools. 
However, in 1033 A.D., Madaba was deserted due to a massive earthquake hitting the area. 850 years later, it was rebuilt by an influx of tribes coming from Al Karak, South of Jordan. 
Geological and Hydrological Features 
Sequences of layers appearing in the big cave of the restaurant (from bottom to top) are as follows:
1. Travertine Rocks precipitated in the presence of hot water. This is the only site in Madaba which reveals precipitation of Travertine Rocks;
2. Granite Rocks (10-20 cm thick) are placed above the Travertine Rocks;
3. Chert
Water flowing from the North-West to the Southeastern part of the area left eroded stones over and inside the cave where Mrah Salameh Restaurant currently lies. It is said that the biggest cave of this restaurant (as shown in the above picture) was used to store water at some point in time, or was even used as a swimming pool by an elite family living near-by.
Mrah Salameh’s see-through glass floors provide an overall pleasant experience of dining above the Stone Age grounds where thousands of populations and civilizations had passed.
