History

Among the feats of ancient engineering,Roman aqueductsengineering is hallmark of the Roman Empire. Gadara aqueduct is one of these marvelous systems exists in Jordan. Itis a transregional Roman aqueduct system that extends from Dille village in Syria, passing through Adra’a(present day Syrian city of Dara’a), Abila (modern Jordanian city of Qweilbeh)and ending in Gadara (modern Umm Qais town) in northern Jordan. The aqueduct runs above ground in Syria for around 60 km, before it disappears under-ground in Jordan into three tunnels, with lengths of 1, 11 and 94 kilometers. Its longest underground section~94 km, is the longest known tunnel system of the ancient world.
The Roman aqueduct crosses the small depression between modern Umm Qaistown and the Acropolis of Gadara on an ancient bridgebefore it penetrates the Gadara archaeological site with a length of 424 metersunder the name of the ‘TheUpper Tunnel’.
What the Tunnel wasused for?
The Roman aqueduct was supposed to supply Gadara with water.  It was designed to fulfill the increase in the daily water requirements of the city in the period from the 1st to the 3rd century AD.However, the Upper Tunnel under Gadara, which constitutes a part of the unfinished section of the aqueduct between ‘Ain Turab’ spring and Gadara, was never used for its intended purpose because of many errors in construction. As an alternative, the tunnel of the olderHellenistic aqueduct (known as the 'QuanatTurab'), that runs underneathGadaraand connects it with ‘Ain Turab’, was joined up with the Roman aqueduct, widened and covered with hydraulic plaster to incorporate the greater amount of incoming water 
The Gadara aqueduct was constructed using the Qanat technique. The technique is based on a series of vertical shafts dug generally at regular intervals.The shafts are then connected underground from opposite sides by gently sloping tunnels. However, the construction shafts of Gadara aqueduct were mostly inclined and not vertical. 
The tunneling of Gadara aqueduct was undertaken in the following stages: First, the construction shafts were dug out at a distance of between 20 and 200 meters from one another and with a depth of between 5 and 70 meters. From the bottom of the shaft, the tunneling was carried out using pilot tunnels that were oriented towards one another from the opposite ends, After the two tunnel ends had met up with one another, the cross-section was widened to the full diameter and the differences in width and height were evened out. The tunnel floor was only scaled when the dug tunnel section was long enough to establish a very small gradient of only 3 to 10 cm per 100 meter .
