History

Shomari is the first wildlife sanctuary in Jordan established by the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature in 1975. It is located in the city of Zarqa in Al-Azraq in the Wadi Al-Shomari area. It was established in 1975 near Al Azraq in the Eastern Desert. It has an area of ​​22 square kilometers. The Arabian Oryx, which began to extinction and breeding species of wild birds, and the visitor can swim a safari in the middle of the wild animals.
The valleys constitute about 60% of its total area and the rest is flat land and covered with basalt stone. Its elevation from sea level is between 510 and 680 meters.
There are currently 11 species of mammals in the reserve, 134 species of birds, mostly migratory birds, and 130 species of wild plants
